This is a non-commercial community project to archive the memories of Stroud as dictated to us. It started as a project within the now departed “Stroud FM” and continues with the co-operation of local history groups in the wider SDC area.
In practice we are not so much concerned with any relevance but more with grabbing the moment and then maybe editing &/or being a bit more selective.
The geographical area we are concentrating on is (there has to be some limit) the demesne of the Stroud District Council. Have a look at this map for the wider area and imagine from Wotton under Edge & Berkley to Painswick & Cranham, and river Severn to Chalford & Sapperton. And see this map for the location within the UK.
In addition to stories, what is emerging is a small number of dialect words not seen documented elsewhere. Like “snobbing” and “scag”.
We are being pro-active in reaching out to the community but don’t want to miss out by ignorance so would like to record your stories, either where you are or at a convivial location. Contributors are frequently given CDs of their contribution. A thankyou for being recorded. Feedback tells us this has often been shared with their families and warmly received.
Please get in touch.
